Who's Who

Meet our Coaching team and volunteers.

Zofia Kozien, Head Coach
zofiaphoto
Zofia comes from Krakow, Poland, and has lived in England since coming for a short holiday in 1985. She started swimming at school, aged 7, and in the first year mastered a good backstroke, but refused to swim freestyle. After being talent spotted by the Junior Coach of 'Wisla' Krakow, Zofia joined that club’s competitive squad and pretty quickly became obsessed with swimming. She spent many, many happy hours swimming and competing at national and east-national level. Between 1972 and 1976, Zofia trained as a member of the Olympic Talent Development Squad, preparing for 1976 Summer Olympics, celebrated in Montreal, Canada.

When her younger daughter started to swim with Acton
SC, in 2003, the hidden "swimming obsession" surfaced, and Zofia started coaching. She came to Verulam SC as a Level 3 ASA Club Coach, first as our Intermediate Squad coach and we were very pleased when she became Head Coach in November, 2009.

"When coaching I’m trying to help swimmers to achieve their potential, whatever their personal goal, learn to swim, fitness or competitive swimming. Maybe one day, one of ‘my’ swimmers will still be training with me and will make it to the Olympic podium."

Graham Newell, Coach
Graham has recently joined Verulam ASC as a Level 2 Club Coach. He comes with a wealth of swimming experience, having been involved and competing in swimming for over 25yrs. He has a BA Hons in PE and QTS, and works at a local secondary school, during which time he has been instrumental in selecting swimmers from the Watford district to swim for the Herts County Secondary School Galas. Graham looks forward to seeing Verulam progress from strength to strength.

Tracey Harrison, Coach
Tracey started swimming for Verulam ASC when she was 11 years old, and has subsequently had many happy years with the Club. At 17, she started to help pool side after she gained her Level 1 Swim Teacher Qualification, and a year later, her Level 2 which allowed her to coach sessions. Tracey is now a full time swimming instructor, teaching all ages. "Verulam has been like a second family to me over the years and has given me some of my best friends. Hope to see you on pool side soon."

Helen Hutton, Coach

Kevin Brammer, Coach

Ann Huntingford, Coach

Faith Nicholson
, Learn-to-swim head teacher
faithFaith has been teaching new swimmers at Verulam ASC for 7 years, starting out as a volunteer while working towards her Duke of Edinburgh Award, and finally after achieving her Level 2 Swim Teacher Qualification, took over from Val as head teacher.

Learn-to-swim teacher, Val Chapman

Val has been with Verulam ASC for nearly 30 years and has been involved with many roles behind the scenes, as well as coaching. A couple of years ago she moved into the role of head teacher in the learn-to-swim section, and although she is still very much involved here, was pleased to be able to hand over this role to Faith.

A huge thank you to all our volunteers.

But we still need more volunteers. If you can spare some time to help either on poolside or with administration, then please contact us through the website. We will provide all the help and support you need, and it's a great way to find out more about the club and meet new people!
